With Bermee
Herpetologist Juan “Bermee” Bermudez brings live animals to the ranch to teach and entertain and inspires exploration of Elkhorn’s desert creatures with kids and adults! His curiosity and energy about nature and the ranch environment are uplifting. This residency week is extremely family friendly for all age groups. The ranch becomes the science centered experiential learning vacation beyond traditional education!
Bermee brings animals from his personal collection of reptiles, insects and amphibians to show during evening demonstrations. His Eastern Indigo snake, Titan, serves as an ambassador for all snakes.
Bermee is particularly careful about safety and hygiene, regarding handling animals without harm to any party. He encourages people to look beyond their wariness about critters. His goals are to model: respect, not fear; to admire, not despise; to appreciate their role within nature; and to recognize their curious beauty and complexity. Many hands-on opportunities are offered.

During the day, Bermee participates in ranch activities and can be found scouting the ranch seeking Elkhorn creatures, usually kids enthusiastically trailing him. After evening meals at the ranch, he presents “show and tells’ to wow everyone, injecting knowledgeable information with humor.
Bermee is primarily self-taught herpetologist hailing from Yuma, Arizona. He takes his Yumanimals program on the road to schools in Yuma. He has taken training courses given by the Rattlesnake Conservancy at Arizona’s unique Rattlesnake Ranch, received certification from the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary for rattlesnake relocation, and helped in Speckled Rattlesnake surveys with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
A special shout-out to Bermee!
My husband and I have visited the Elkhorn Ranch for horse riding activities for over ten years. In the April just ended, on “Meet and Greet” the first night, we met a friendly new guest. Mary excitedly introduced “Bermee” to us as our resident herpetologist for the week. Kids had already been searching for critters, which is pretty normal there. But Bermee took a personal interest in their efforts. He used his own info as a teachable moment as he held their attention and supported their knowledge, gaining their trust. He held their respect throughout the week. His enthusiasm for their efforts kept them engaged and enthused.
After evening meals most guests “do their own thing.” Mary suggested we all gather at the other end of the dining room where Bermee would present. Being retired teachers we were curious. Once he began, I was caught up by his fervor. His passion was evident. I found his enthusiasm never waned. He held my interest as he hinted at future sessions. He used humor and, at times, uncertainty, to create interest. We met spiders, lizards, and snakes. He offered touch sessions with most, excluding the venomous snakes. I personally held his large boa as did others. We were assured of our personal safety throughout and advised to wash our hands afterwards.
Each night we met new creatures and on the last night we were treated to the Grand Finale. That night was a guest game with information gleaned through the week. Teams were pitted against each other and vied for the win. A good time was had by all.
Then my husband and I headed back to our cabin, my husband shouted to LOOK OUT! It was quite dark and I started jumping around. When I stopped, he shone a light on the tarantula on our doorstep. We had never seen one at the Elkhorn. I kept the light on it as my husband ran back to get Bermee. He came right away, captured it, and took it away. We got to name it. Bermee said it was female so we named it Linda. It resides at the ranch in its own environment now.
I was thrilled when Mary informed me that Bermee would be back during our next stay. We are planning on bringing our children and 4 grandchildren (11, 9, 6, and 2) along with us. I would highly recommend a visit to the Elkhorn to experience this unique adventure week for families with children and teens! A special shout-out to Bermee!
