The Miller family has welcomed guests to Elkhorn Ranch near Tucson, Arizona since 1945. Our intimate dude ranch welcomes solo travelers, families and multi-generational groups for one week long (or longer) all inclusive stays featuring guided horseback rides and hikes. We are a conservation minded working ranch that raises horses, alongside neighboring cattle ranches, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge and Baboquivari Peak Wilderness. Curious Sonoran desert flora and fauna, wide open country, Arizona’s famous sunshine and blue skies, and personalized hospitality provide an ideal setting for outdoor adventure, rejuvenation and camaraderie.
The first generation of the Miller family, Grace and Ernest, established Elkhorn Ranch in the Gallatin Canyon of Montana in 1922. The Millers were founding members of the Dude Ranchers’ Association. when it formed in 1926. The Elkhorn Ranch in Arizona was acquired in 1945 to enable year round dude ranch operations for the Millers and their crew. In 1961, the second generation took over management and the ranches were split into separate businesses. Barb and Ron Hymas ran Elkhorn Ranch Montana; and Bob and Jan Miller moved full-time to Arizona to run the Elkhorn Ranch in Arizona. They raised their 4 children Linda, Don, Charley and Tom at the ranch.
Today Elkhorn Ranch continues to be owned and operated by the Miller family. Charley and Mary Miller, married in 1996, represent the 3rd generation; and their daughters Alicia Miller and Clara Miller, and Clara’s husband Alvaro Campos, are now taking on management roles. Clara is taking over management of the horseback riding, with guidance from Charley. Alvaro runs the physical plant, hiking programs, and occasionally takes on chef duties. Alicia works with Mary on the hospitality and business side of the ranch.
The Millers feel fortunate to welcome many returning guests and crew to the ranch, continuing the traditions of families taking in friends that has always been the heart of dude ranching!
